The Ancient Wisdom of Healing Stones

Stones and crystals have been used as healing entities across many cultures over the centuries for balance, transformation, and restoration. Often, the terms “stones” and “crystals” are used interchangeably, but they carry subtle differences. Crystals have a defined geometric structure and grow in repeating patterns—such as quartz or amethyst. Stones, on the other hand, may not have this crystalline form. They are often more raw, weathered by time, and shaped by the earth’s natural forces. I tend to use the term “stones” when referring to any of these healing gems.

Many spiritual traditions believe that stones are our oldest ancestors. Formed over millions—sometimes billions—of years, stones have witnessed the shaping of continents, the birth of mountains, and the cycles of life long before humans ever walked the earth. They carry within them the memory of the planet. When we connect with stones, we’re not just tapping into their mineral makeup—we’re engaging with the deep, ancient rhythms of Earth itself. This is why so many people describe holding a stone as feeling like they’re being “held” in return.

Healing stones work by interacting with our body’s subtle energy systems. Each stone has its own vibration, and when placed on or near the body, it can help realign imbalances, calm the nervous system, and promote emotional release. For example, rose quartz is known for supporting heart healing and self-love, while blue kyanite is used for dispelling negativity and enhancing tranquility. These stones don’t replace modern medicine, but they can be powerful complements to it, offering energetic balance, and a sense of connection to the wider world.

I use stones daily for personal energy support with jewelry, a stone in my pocket, or a piece beside my bed to support the specific vibration I’m seeking—like pyrite for focus and clarity, or citrine for lightness and joy.  I’m ever amazed by the powerful energy shift a tiny piece of stone can bring. I tuck stones all around the house too for balancing the energy of our home, like selenite for cleansing, and black tourmaline for protection.

I also incorporate the healing power of stones in the Reiki and Tarot offerings of Healing Path Studio. While holding the booking information of a client, I tune into their current energy to intuitively select a stone from my collection that will offer a supportive vibration for them. I introduce the selected stone at the beginning of a session, and place it on a bed of clear quartz to add its healing effects to the experience. The properties of clear quartz amplify and record the energy of the stone during the session, and afterward I invite the client to select a piece of the clear quartz to keep for ongoing support.
